UPDATE: Swimming pool operations

07 January 2025

As part of the City's ongoing efforts, a phased reopening plan is in place to ensure that 37 municipal pools are fully operational by the end of the summer season, which concludes during the Easter holidays in April 2025. Read more below:

Teams are working to address maintenance and operational requirements to meet this goal and ensure a positive experience for all visitors. Further updates will be shared as progress continues.

At present, 27 swimming pools are open to the public, with the remaining 10 still scheduled for opening over the coming weeks.

The operational facilities are: Athlone, Bonteheuwel, Hanover Park, Elsies River, Parow North, Parow Valley, Bellville Central, Emthonjeni, Delft, Blue Downs, Kuils River Resort, Browns Farm, Lentegeur, Zandvlei Caravan Park, Muizenberg, Wynberg, Retreat, Newlands, Langa, Kensington, Observatory, Atlantis, Morningstar, Long Street, Sea Point and Trafalgar.

Mnandi was closed for two days due to water quality, and is anticipated to reopen tomorrow, 8 January.

The reopening of additional pools is anticipated as follows:

  • Between 8 and 12 January 2025: Westridge, Eastridge and Khayelitsha are anticipated to reopen.
  • Between 13 and 19 January 2025: Ruyterwacht, Strand, Manenberg, Ravensmead, Monwabisi (subject to electrical work by Eskom)
  • Between 20 and 27 January 2025: Goodwood
  • Between 3 and 9 February 2025: Bellville South

Some delays remain due to extended construction timelines and the December builders' break impacting:

  • Manenberg swimming pool: Repairs to the filtration system and deck are under way.
  • Ravensmead swimming pool: Due to supply lead times, installation of the pump and motor was delayed. Filtration work is in progress.
  • Monwabisi Resort Pool: Repairs are complete, but the facility's reopening depends on Eskom resolving an electrical issue.

'Swimming pools are more than just recreational facilities -  they're essential spaces for our communities to connect, stay active and enjoy safely. While we acknowledge some delays, we are committed to getting every pool ready to the highest standards. Thank you for your patience as we work to provide quality facilities,' said Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

Here's how the pools will operate this summer:

1. Daily operations from 6 December 2024 to 31 January 2025

2. Weekends only: 1 February to 30 March 2025

3. Daily operations: 31 March to 21 April 2025

The City will continue to provide regular updates and ensure every open facility is welcoming and safe for residents. For more information on specific pools and their hours, please visit the City's website or contact your nearest community facility.
